Breakdown

Z Spot is a classic Cover 3 beater out of Singleback Doubles 11 personnel that attacks the flat, hook, and corner zones simultaneously. The backside X runs a deep in breaking route across the field while the slot receiver runs a short hitch, and the front side combines a spot route from the TE (shown breaking into the middle hook area) with the outside receiver clearing vertically up the seam to hold the corner deep. The HB releases out of the backfield on a check release flat route, giving the QB a five level progression from the spot concept underneath to the flat as the primary answer against zone drops. Primary read starts with the spot route sitting down in the hook, then works to the flat where the HB is checking down against Cover 3 zone defenders who widen with the vertical stretch.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety pre snap, this usually signals Cover 3 which is exactly the shell this play is designed to punish with the spot and flat combo. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he widens with the vertical clear out route the spot route sitting underneath becomes wide open for an easy completion. Beware of Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells with two deep safeties, the extra underneath defender can jump the spot route and take away the primary read. Key the middle linebacker depth, if he drops quickly into the hook zone against the spot route the QB should progress immediately to the HB check release in the flat. User controlled defenders sitting in a lurk position on the spot route can bait a throw, so scan the flat and vertical routes as safety valves before committing to the middle of the field.

Usage Tips

Attack Cover 3 shells first since the spot concept is designed to sit the underneath defender down and open the flat throw behind him.

Watch the flat defender pre snap, if he sits at five yards or deeper the HB check release into the flat becomes an easy conversion throw on third and short.

Use the vertical clear out route on the outside to hold the deep third defender, this opens a throwing lane for the spot route if the CB bites on the flat.

Pair this play with Curl Flats or Y Shallow Cross in your play calling script to keep defenders guessing between spot concepts and shallow crossers out of the same formation.

Against man coverage, hot route the slot hitch into a speed out to create separation quickly, since spot concepts naturally lose value against man beaters unless you adjust the shallow routes.
