PA Ctr Waggle is a play-action pass out of Singleback Doubles that sells a center run fake before the QB waggles out to the flat behind the blocking. The two receivers to the boundary run a vertical route from the outside stack and a deep out that breaks toward the sideline, while the TE runs a flat route underneath and the backside X runs a corner route off a quick out and up stem. This is a man beater built around the waggle action, with the QB rolling to the strong side to create a run pass conflict for the edge defender and a stretch on the flat to corner combo. The primary read progression starts with the TE in the flat, moves to the corner route breaking behind him, and comes back to the deep out and vertical if the play-action freezes the linebackers long enough.

Defensive Reads

Watch strong safety alignment before the snap, if he is stacked over the slot at eight yards or more he can rob the corner route so you need to go to the flat first. Man coverage with no underneath help on the TE flat route is where this play wins most consistently since the roll gives the QB easy access. Zone shells with a hard flat defender sitting at five yards can jump the TE route immediately, so key his depth and leverage before committing. Watch for a contain blitz off the edge the QB is rolling toward, since a fast defensive end crash can disrupt the waggle timing and force an early checkdown. If the linebackers do not bite on the center fake and instead sink into their zone drops immediately, the vertical route on the backside becomes the best answer against a spy or zone drop look.

Usage Tips

Run this from run heavy personnel and situations where you have already established the inside zone or HB Power O to make the center fake believable to the defense.

Check the flat defender before the snap, if he sits at five yards or less the flat route to the TE will be covered so plan to work the corner route instead.

Use the corner route as your explosive shot play answer against man coverage since it breaks away from the waggle roll and creates natural separation on outside leverage corners.

Combine this with HB Power O and Tight Zone Wk earlier in a series so linebackers start biting on run action, which opens up the waggle boot fake later in the game.

On third and medium, hot route the vertical route on the backside into a deep comeback or dig if you see a single high safety cheating late.
