Slot Seam out of Singleback Doubles gives you a five man route concept built around a seam shot up the middle of the field. The inside slot receiver runs a vertical seam splitting the two safeties, while the outside receiver on that side runs an in route across the field underneath, clearing space and giving the seam room to work against linebacker drops. On the backside, the boundary receiver runs a comeback breaking outside, the outside receiver on the strong side flags out on a corner route, and the running back checks down to the flat out of the backfield. This is a man beater and can also stress single high zone shells, with the primary read progressing from the seam route first, then working to the backside comeback if the safety rotates over the top.

Defensive Reads

Check the safety alignment before the snap, since a single high safety opens the seam throwing window while two deep safeties will squeeze it and force you to the comeback Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, since shallow zone drops can jump the seam route if the linebacker reads the quarterback's eyes early User controlled defenders sitting in a lurk spot over the middle are the biggest threat to this concept, so be ready to look off the seam and reset to the backside comeback or flat check down Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the ideal matchup for this play, especially against Cover 0 or Cover 1 blitz packages where the seam can win vertically before help arrives If you see a nano blitz or heavy interior pressure package, get the ball out quickly to the flat or comeback since the seam route takes time to develop and can get the quarterback hit before the throw

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing single high or two high safeties, since this play is designed to attack the void behind linebackers when there is only one deep defender over the middle

If you see Cover 3 or Cover 1 with a deep middle defender, the seam route will be contested, so be ready to reset your eyes to the comeback route on the backside for a quicker, safer completion

Use the seam as a shot play on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage, since a completed seam route can chunk up yards fast against blitz heavy or man coverage calls

Hot route the flat running back into a wheel route if you are seeing linebackers sit low in zone, giving yourself a leak out option if the seam window closes

Pair this play with Four Verticals or Sluggo Seam in your play-calling sequence to keep the defense guessing on middle of field coverage rotation, then come back to Slot Seam once you bait a single high look
