HB Wide Draw out of Singleback Doubles shows five offensive linemen holding their blocks at the snap while the HB takes a delayed handoff and bends the run to the outside edge, as shown by the red path curving from behind the QB toward the perimeter. This is a designed run play built to bait the pass rush upfield before the ball carrier attacks the flank, making it a strong counter against aggressive man and blitz-heavy defenses rather than a pass concept. The primary read is patience: let the offensive line sell pass protection, then work the outside lane once the second level flows inside.
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth: linebackers stacked tight behind the line signal a blitz that this draw can exploit if the edge defenders bite on the pass rush. Watch both defensive ends off the snap, since a hard upfield rush from either side is the green light to bend the run outside. Post-snap, track the flow of the second level linebackers; if they sit and read instead of flowing with the play fake, the cutback lane disappears and this play loses value. Zone shells with disciplined linebackers who stay square to the backfield are the best way to shut this down, since they will not overcommit to the pass. Man coverage on the perimeter with off-ball linebackers spying the backfield also takes away the delayed outside path, so save this call for downs where the defense is clearly geared toward the pass.
Call this on early downs after showing several dropback passes from the same Doubles personnel to keep the defense in pass-read mode. Watch pre-snap for defensive ends and outside linebackers crashing hard off the edge, since their aggressive first step is exactly what widens the lane for this draw. Use it against nickel and dime sub packages that remove run support in favor of extra DBs, especially when the box shows five or fewer defenders. Pair it in a play-action sequence with HB Slam or HB Dive from the same formation so linebackers cannot key on the delayed mesh point. If the CPU or user defense starts diagnosing the draw quickly, mix in HB Pump Draw or HB Counter from the same set to keep the timing unpredictable.
