Breakdown

Whip Unders lines up out of Singleback Doubles with 11 personnel and shows a clear route distribution to both sides of the field. To the boundary, the inline receiver runs an out and up the seam, clearing the flat for the underneath receiver to run a whip route back inside, creating a natural pick and separation window against man coverage. On the field side, the slot receiver runs a shallow under crossing the field while the outside receiver clears vertically up the numbers, and the backside receiver runs a flat route to the sideline. The primary read progression starts with the whip route working against man leverage, then bounces to the shallow crosser as the zone beater against soft coverage or if the whip gets jumped.

Defensive Reads

Watch for man coverage indicators like cornerbacks lined up tight on the line since the whip route wins immediately against that leverage. Identify if there is a linebacker spying the shallow crosser, if that defender flows quickly the crossing route will be taken away and you should reset to the vertical clear out or flat route. Check safety depth before the snap: two high safeties usually signal zone coverage which favors the shallow cross over the whip route. Post snap key the flow of underneath zone defenders in a Cover 3 or Tampa 2 look since the whip route sits in a soft spot if linebackers overcommit to the run fake or the flat. Beware of a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or lurking near the crossing route, this is the biggest threat to this concept and should push your read to the flat or the vertical clear out route instead.

Usage Tips

Attack man coverage first by throwing the whip route timing throw before the defender can recover from the route break.

Check the middle of the field pre snap: if you see single high safety look to layer the whip over the underneath defenders since the pick concept helps beat man leverage.

Against zone shells, work the shallow crosser as your primary since it settles into soft spots between the linebackers and stresses the flow of a Tampa 2 or Cover 3.

Use this play on second and short or third and medium since the whip route wins quickly and the shallow cross provides a checkdown against a blitz look.

Pair Whip Unders with Four Verticals or Deep Attack from the same Doubles set to keep the defense honest, then come back to Whip Unders once safeties start creeping up to defend the shallow routes.
