Whip Unders lines up in Singleback Doubles with 11 personnel and shows a five man route concept with no visible pass protection blockers pulled, meaning it's a straight dropback pass rather than play-action or an RPO. The backside receiver runs a whip route, breaking outside then snapping back inside to sit in the shallow zone, while the outside receiver on that side clears out with a deep out toward the sideline. On the strong side, the inner slot receiver runs a deep crossing route from the middle of the field, the outside receiver sits in a flat/out route, and the far receiver climbs on a deep corner route that stretches the defense vertically to the boundary. This is a zone beater at its core, using the whip route and crosser to sit in soft spots underneath while the corner route occupies deep zone defenders, and the primary read progression starts with the whip route working back to the QB, then to the deep crosser working across the formation, and finally to the corner route as the low percentage shot play if zone coverage bites underneath.
Defensive Reads
Read the safety alignment before the snap: two deep safeties in Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells leave underneath zones vulnerable to the whip route and deep crosser sitting down. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, since shallow zone drops will squeeze the whip route's window and force the QB to hold the ball longer. Identify user controlled defenders lurking in the shallow to intermediate middle zone, as they can jump the deep crossing route if they read the QB's eyes early. Man coverage with press corners on the outside receivers can disrupt the deep out and corner routes at the line, slowing the timing of the whole concept. Cover 3 shells with a hard flat defender will crowd the whip route's landing spot, making the deep crosser or corner route the better answer against that shell.
Usage Tips
Use this play on second and medium or third and short distances since the whip route settles quickly and gives the QB a rhythm throw against zone drops.
Check the middle of the field pre-snap: if you see two safeties high in a shell like Cover 2 or Cover 4, the whip route and shallow crosser will have soft spots to sit in against zone linebackers.
Hot route the flat receiver into a quick out if you see a cornerback pressed and playing off technique, since that gives you a quick answer against man coverage without needing the whip to fully develop.
Pair this play with Curl Flats or Z Under from the same set to keep the defense guessing between deep crossers and quick underneath combinations, forcing linebackers to widen their zone drops.
Against aggressive user blitzes, prioritize the whip route as your hot read since it breaks inside quickly and gives the QB a fast release valve before pressure arrives.
