TE Post out of Singleback Doubles sends the TE on a post that cuts across the deep middle while the backside X runs a deep corner route to stretch the safety opposite. The slot receiver and backside outside receiver run a mesh style combo underneath, one working an out to the flat and the other clearing under and out to the boundary, while the RB releases out of the backfield on a wheel/flat route to the open side. The primary read is the TE post attacking the middle of the field, working to the corner route on the backside if the safety jumps the post, then checking down to the RB or underneath out routes if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify if the safety is aligned over the TE or shaded to the post side, since that tells you if the throwing window will be tight. Versus man coverage, watch for a slot defender trying to funnel the TE inside, which usually means a linebacker or safety is sitting in a lurk spot underneath the post. Versus zone, key the middle linebacker's drop, if he sinks hard with the post that usually signals a Tampa 2 or a deep half shell and the corner route becomes the better answer. Post snap, if the user controls the free safety and breaks late on the post, throw with anticipation before the route fully breaks to beat the closing angle. This concept struggles against a true two high shell with disciplined safeties, so be ready to check down to the RB or underneath outs if the deep middle stays clogged.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety shells before the snap since the TE post is designed to split the safety and attack the void behind linebackers in that look.

If you see two deep safeties, hot route the TE post into a deep dig or slot the corner route to the same side to avoid throwing into a two high shell.

Use the backside corner route as a shot play alert versus aggressive man corners who like to jump underneath routes.

Pair this play with Flanker Drag or Curl Flats earlier in a drive so linebackers start cheating shallow, opening up the post window over the middle.

Best called on second or third and medium when you need a explosive gain but still have a checkdown safety valve to the RB.
