Breakdown

Fork is a Singleback Doubles 11 personnel flood concept that stresses one side of the field vertically and horizontally at the same time. To the right, the outer receiver runs a corner route while the slot receiver breaks underneath on an out, creating a natural high low flood combo against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone drops. On the left, the flanker runs a go route straight up the boundary while the tight end works a quick out underneath him, and the running back releases out of the backfield on a swing route into the flat for a checkdown and outlet against blitz pressure. The primary read progression starts with the flood side corner to out combo, checks the go and out combo on the left if the safety rotates over, and finishes with the running back swing as the outlet valve.

Defensive Reads

Check pre snap safety alignment, since a single high safety confirms Cover 3 or Cover 1 and tells you the flood side corner route has a bigger throwing window against a deep third defender. Watch the flat defender to the flood side after the snap, if he sinks with the corner route the underneath out route will be wide open for an easy completion. Identify if the cornerback across from the go route is playing off man or bail technique, since that route becomes a shot play answer versus man coverage with no safety help. Read linebacker depth before the snap, shallow linebackers signal potential blitz or man coverage on the running back, which means the swing route may get picked up quickly and should not be your first read. This play struggles against Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties, since the flood side corner route runs into help over the top and the defense can squeeze the flood combo with numbers.

Usage Tips

Attack Cover 3 shells first since the flood side corner route stretches the deep third defender while the out route sits underneath in the void that the flat defender vacates.

Use this on second and long or third and medium when defenses lean on zone drops, since the flood concept punishes defenders who sink instead of matching routes.

Motion the running back or check the pre snap alignment of the slot corner to confirm if you are getting man or zone, then hot route the swing to a flat route if you see man coverage and want a quicker option underneath.

Pair Fork with Four Verticals or Streaks in your play calling sequence so defenses cannot sit on the flood side out route, forcing linebackers to respect vertical shots on early downs before you come back to this concept.

If the user controlled defender jumps the flood side out route, immediately reset your eyes to the backside go route since the corner will often be isolated with no safety help over the top in single high shells.
