Breakdown

PA Slot Stop is a play-action pass out of Singleback Doubles 11 personnel that uses a run fake to hold the linebackers before working a stop/curl and vertical combo to the boundary side. The slot receiver runs the red route stop, breaking down hard and settling in front of the underneath defenders as an immediate hot read, while the outside receiver on that side stacks a deep comeback route up top. On the backside, the flanker runs a deep in-breaking route and the TE or third receiver on the right side runs a comeback/curl of his own, giving you a full field stop and comeback combo built to attack zone drops. The primary read progression starts with the slot stop route underneath, then works to the backside comeback if the flats and hooks are cleared out.

Defensive Reads

Read the linebacker depth immediately after the snap, since shallow linebackers who bite on the run fake open up easy throwing lanes for the stop route. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, since two high shells (like Cover 2 or Cover 4) tend to leave the stop routes open in the intermediate zones. Watch for user controlled defenders sitting in the underneath zones or spying the run fake, since a smart human user can jump the stop route and undercut it for a big hit or interception. Look for Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone drops on the backside, since the comeback route is designed to sit down in the void created by cornerbacks who bail deep off the snap. Beware of aggressive blitz packages or nano blitzes that attack the play fake, since play action against pressure heavy fronts can result in a sack if the fake holds up the quarterback too long.

Usage Tips

Sell the run fake by letting the play action animation play out before rushing your first read, especially against aggressive linebackers who bite on the HB action.

Use this play on early downs, particularly 1st and 10 or 2nd and medium, since the run fake is more believable and defenses are more likely to sit in run friendly fronts.

Check the slot stop route first against zone coverage since it sits down in the soft spot of hook zones and gives you a safe, high percentage completion.

If you see man coverage pre-snap, hot route the backside comeback into a corner or post to create separation against a trailing corner, since comebacks lose value versus man leverage.

Pair this play with HB Dive or Inside Zone from the same formation to keep linebackers honest, then call PA Slot Stop once you have established the ground game to maximize the play fake's effectiveness.

Combine with Four Verticals or Dagger later in a series once defenders start jumping the stop and comeback routes, since those double moves punish overaggressive underneath defenders.
