HB Power O Alert Bubble is a run play out of Singleback Doubles with an alert tag that sends the backside slot receiver on a bubble screen while the frontside slot runs a quick out and up as a decoy read. The offensive line pulls the backside guard to lead through the hole for the HB Power O run, with the fullback or lead blocker sealing the point of attack as the RB takes a downhill angle off tackle. This is primarily a run play with a built in screen alert against overplayed run fits, giving the QB a pre-snap or post-snap bail option if the defense crashes hard inside. Primary read starts with the alert bubble screen if the defense shows blitz or overcommits numbers into the box, then progresses to the Power O run through the designated gap.
Defensive Reads
Key the box count before the snap, stacked fronts with eight in the box are begging for the bubble alert to be thrown. Watch the slot defender over the bubble receiver, if he sits at a normal depth without creeping down he can jump the route and blow it up. Read the linebacker flow post-snap, if they flow hard to the pulling guard and the play side gap, the cutback lane behind the Power O blocking scheme opens up. Man coverage with no extra run support struggles to defend both the alert bubble and the interior run gap simultaneously. Nano blitzes and edge pressure packages can beat the Power O to the mesh point, so track defensive end alignment for quick penetration off the snap.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap alert read to check defender counts in the box before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box, hot route to the bubble screen immediately.
Watch for slot corners or nickel defenders creeping down pre-snap, that is your cue the bubble alert will hit for easy yards.
Run this on early downs like first and second and ten to keep the defense honest between run and quick screen without changing personnel.
Pair this with HB Power O and PA Power O in the same series so linebackers cannot sit on the alert tag or the interior run fit.
Against aggressive user blitzers flying downhill, trust the bubble alert since the pulling guard leaves the backside vacated for the screen to develop.
