Corner Strike out of Singleback Doubles is a five man route concept built around two corner routes stacked on the outside receivers, with the backside receiver on the left running an out and up into a corner while the underneath receiver on that side runs a shallow out. On the right side the outside receiver breaks into a corner route while the slot underneath runs a flat route, and the running back releases up the middle on a check release or seam read against the blitz. This is a man beater that stresses the boundary corners and safeties with high low corner combinations on both sides, and the primary read progression starts with the right side corner route working against the deep half or the man defender, then works to the flat underneath, and finally checks down to the backside out route and running back release if both corners are covered.

Defensive Reads

Look for two high safety shells pre-snap since split safeties can rob the corner routes on both sides and force you into the underneath flat and out reads. Identify man coverage on the outside cornerbacks, if they are pressed at the line the corner routes have a strong chance to win on double moves and body position. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow dropping linebackers can undercut the running back check release and disrupt your checkdown option. Key the user controlled safety after the snap, a lurking safety who bails deep to one side signals you should throw the corner route to the opposite number. Blitz heavy fronts with man coverage behind them can be countered here since the quick flat and out routes give you a fast answer against pressure, but zone blitz calls that drop a defensive lineman into the shallow zone can jump those underneath throws.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and long or third and medium when you need to attack the sideline against man coverage or split safety shells.

Check pre-snap for single high safety looks, if the safety is shading to one side of the field throw the corner route on the opposite side where the defender has less deep help.

Motion the slot receiver before the snap to identify man versus zone, if the defender follows across the formation you have a clean man beater with the corner routes.

Pair this play with Flanker Drive or Curl Flats in your playcalling sequence so defenses cannot sit on the deep corner routes and get baited into jumping underneath.

Hot route the running back into a pass protection stay block versus known blitz teams since the check release adds a half second of delay that can get your quarterback hit.
