PA HB Look is a play-action shot play out of Singleback Doubles that sells the run fake before attacking the defense vertically on both edges. Off the run fake, the backside receiver runs a deep post while the frontside receiver works a corner route, with the slot receiver on the corner side running a swing/flat route out to the sideline as a checkdown and the remaining slot receiver stays in to chip and release into a shallow flat crossing route. The tight end or fullback releases into the flat off the play fake, giving the quarterback a layered read from deep shots to a quick outlet if the pass rush closes the pocket. Primary progression starts with the post route, works to the corner route on the opposite side, and comes down to the flat/swing route as the checkdown against pressure or tight coverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch for single high safety alignment pre-snap since that signals man coverage or Cover 3, both of which are vulnerable to the post route beating a defender over the top. Two high safety shells indicate Cover 2 or Cover 4, which means the corner route sitting in the honey hole between the corner and safety becomes the better throw. Post snap, track the linebackers dropping into underneath zones, if they bite hard on the run fake the shallow flat and swing routes will be wide open. Be wary of a user controlled safety sitting deep in the middle of the field since that defender can jump the post route if the quarterback stares it down. Against man coverage, look for the flat defender to widen with the swing route, which opens a passing lane for the crossing shallow route behind him.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs like first or second and short to mid distance so the run fake actually holds linebackers and safeties.

Check the safety alignment before the snap, single high shells open up the post route while two high shells make the corner route the better first read.

Hot route the backside flat defender into a deeper route or motion a receiver across if you see man coverage to create natural picks off the shallow crosses.

Pair this with HB Dive or Inside Zone earlier in a drive so the play fake carries more weight against aggressive linebackers and box safeties.

Throw to the flat or swing route quickly against blitz-heavy looks since the play design gives you a built in answer to beat pressure without holding the ball too long.
