Breakdown

Z Under is a five man route concept out of Singleback Doubles that floods the field with layered depth on the play side and a shallow drag on the backside. The Y runs a seam up the middle, the X out wide releases into a corner route, and the slot X to the flat runs a shallow cross underneath, while the backside receivers work a drag and a deep out combo to hold defenders on the far side. This is a Cover 3 beater and man beater designed to stress a single defender with a vertical seam threat and a flat route stacked underneath it, with the primary read starting on the seam, working down to the shallow cross if the middle is congested.

Defensive Reads

Identify the middle linebacker depth pre-snap since a shallow drop signals zone coverage that lets you throw the seam with anticipation. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle zone, as this player can jump the seam route or the shallow cross if you telegraph the throw. Man coverage on the outside receivers with no safety help over the top is the biggest green light for the seam and corner combo to hit for a big play. Cover 3 with the corner playing the deep third can be exploited by throwing the flood route into the flat before the cornerback rotates down. Heavy blitz packages with five or six man pressure will force a quick decision, so key the shallow cross and drag as your check down options before the pocket collapses.

Usage Tips

Check the middle of the field pre-snap for a single high safety, since the seam route from the Y is your first hot read against Cover 3 and Cover 1 looks.

If the linebackers show blitz or walk up into the box, hot route the shallow cross into a quick option route to give yourself an outlet against pressure.

Use the backside deep out and drag combo to hold a cornerback and linebacker on that side, opening up the seam and flood concept on the play side.

Pair this call with Curl Flats or Double Slants in your play calling sequence so you can attack the same flood concept from different angles and keep defenders guessing.

Best used on second and medium to third and medium situations where the seam and corner combo can pick up a chunk gain or a first down conversion against off man coverage.
