HB Slash is a power run out of Singleback Doubles 11 personnel, with the halfback aligned offset behind the QB and lined up to attack the strong side gap. The diagram shows the four receivers running vertical stems to clear out the second and third level defenders while the offensive line and TE execute down blocks and kick out assignments to create a power lane off tackle. This is a downhill run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the hole, read the kickout block on the edge defender, and decide between bending the run outside or cutting up inside the log block.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the strength of the defensive front and count the box defenders, since HB Slash is most effective when the offense has a numbers advantage at the point of attack. Watch linebacker depth and gap alignment, because a tight 4-3 under front with the strongside linebacker crashing down can beat the kickout block before it develops. Post-snap, key the edge defender assigned to the kickout block and see whether he gets logged inside or spills outside, which dictates whether the ball carrier should bend it back or bounce it. Look for a user-controlled safety or linebacker sitting in the alley, since a disciplined defender reading run fits quickly can close the cutback lane and blow up the play. This run struggles against stacked eight-man fronts and aggressive nano blitz packages that get penetration before the fullback or TE can seal the edge.
Usage Tips
Run HB Slash on early downs when you have numbers in the box, especially against base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts showing six or fewer defenders. Check the defensive alignment pre-snap for an extra hat crashing down the strong side, since that tips off a potential edge blitz that this power scheme can actually exploit if the kickout block gets a hat on a hat. Use motion or a TE shift to identify if the defense is playing man or zone before the snap, since the vertical routes from your receivers will hold safeties and linebackers if defenders bail into man coverage. Pair this play with Inside Zone and HB Power O in the same personnel group to keep the defense guessing between gap schemes and zone schemes without changing your formation tendencies. Mix in HB Counter or Jet Sweep from this set as a changeup once the defense starts flowing hard to the play side, since the misdirection will punish overaggressive linebacker fits.
