The play fakes an inside hand off to hold the linebackers and safeties for a beat before the outside receiver breaks to the corner and the inside receiver climbs to the post, creating a natural high low stretch on any single defender working that half of the field. This is a man beater at its core, though the post route can also split zone defenders if the safety bites on the corner route or the play fake. The primary read progression starts with the post route working the middle of the field, then works out to the corner route if the safety rotates over the top or if a linebacker sits in the post window.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the safety alignment: a single high safety means the post route has a great chance to split the defense, while two deep safeties suggest the corner route will be doubled. Check cornerback press alignment at the line, since press man leaves the corner route vulnerable to getting beat deep if the corner does not get a clean jam. Post snap, watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field trying to lurk the post route, which is the most common way good competitive players shut this play down. Look for single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 pre-snap since the post route will split the safety from the corner route and create a numbers advantage on one side of the field.

Use motion or a quick pre-snap shift to see if the defense follows in man coverage, which confirms this play action shot is live against man beaters.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick option or drag if the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4 so you have a checkdown when the corner and post are both taken away.

This play works best on early downs like first or second and ten when defenses are more willing to bite on the play fake and play action rollout tendencies.
