PA Corner Post is a play-action man beater out of Singleback Doubles that uses a run fake to freeze the linebackers before attacking the deep half of the field. The route combo pairs a corner route to one side with a post from the opposite receiver, stretching zone defenders horizontally while creating natural rub leverage against man coverage. Primary read progression starts with the corner route against off man or Cover 3 cornerbacks, then works to the post if the safety jumps the corner or if you diagnose Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells that leave the middle of the field open.
Defensive Reads
Watch for cornerbacks pressing at the line pre-snap. Press man coverage tips off man beaters, and the rub concept between the corner and post routes will create natural separation. Identify single high safety alignment before the snap. That usually means Cover 3 or Cover 1, and the corner route wins outside against the flat defender's zone drop. If you see two safeties split deep with outside cornerbacks squatting short, that is Cover 2 or Cover 4, and the post route will split the safeties in the seam. Post snap, key the middle linebacker's drop. If he sinks into the deep middle instead of biting the run fake, that lurk threat can undercut the post route, so be ready to come back to the corner route. Watch for blitz packages sending extra rushers off the edge. If the offensive line cannot pick up the pressure, the play-action fake takes too long and the quarterback will not have time to progress through both reads.
Usage Tips
Sell the play-action fake by holding the pump animation as long as possible to freeze linebackers and hold the strong safety in the box before your eyes go downfield.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap. Two high safeties with depth usually means Cover 2 or Cover 4, which favors the post beating the seam. A single high safety cheating to one side signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, which favors the corner route winning outside.
Hot route the underneath receiver into a flat or drag route if you anticipate a blitz, giving yourself a quick outlet against pressure looks.
This play hits best on second and long or third and medium situations where defenses are more likely to sit in zone coverage and respect the run fake.
Pair this with HB Power O or PA Boot Comeback earlier in a series so defenders start biting on the run action, then hit them with PA Corner Post once they start creeping linebackers into the box.
