Y Shallow Cross lines up from Singleback Doubles with 11 personnel and sends the Y receiver on a shallow crossing route underneath from left to right, sitting just past the traffic in the middle of the field. The backside outfield receiver runs a deep dig that turns in over the middle at roughly 15 yards, while the two outside receivers stretch the defense vertically on go routes and the running back releases into the flat as a checkdown. This is a man beater built to create natural rub traffic for the shallow route against man coverage, though the dig behind it also punishes zone defenses that collapse underneath. Usage Tips

Take a pre-snap look at linebacker depth because the shallow crosser only works if there is a lane underneath the second level, so against blitz-heavy alignments expect the shallow to get picked up quickly and be ready to hit the dig instead

Use the shallow route as a rub against man coverage by letting it drag defenders into the traffic near the formation, which naturally separates man corners from the trailing dig route

Hot route the outside go routes into comebacks or hitches against soft press corners if you see a two-high shell pre-snap, since the vertical stems are the least reliable part of this concept versus zone

This play works best on second and medium to second and long where the dig route has room to sit down before the safety can rotate over the top
