PA Jet Sweep from Singleback Doubles sells the jet motion sweep fake to freeze linebackers and second level defenders before working a play-action passing concept off the run action. The offensive line executes sweep blocking steps to sell run, holding down safeties and box defenders while the receivers work vertical and intermediate breaking routes behind the fake. This is a play-action shot play designed to punish teams that key run flow or bring linebackers downhill on jet sweep tendencies, and the primary read progression starts with the deep shot off the play fake before working back to the underneath route if the top is taken away.

Defensive Reads

Check the safety depth before the snap, if both safeties are sitting shallow at 8 to 10 yards expecting run support this play has a clean throwing lane over the top. Watch the linebacker flow immediately after the jet motion snap, if they crash hard toward the sweep side the middle of the field and the backside are wide open for the play fake to exploit. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 1 shells presnap since single high safety looks are the most vulnerable to the deep shot because there is only one defender to cover the top of the field. Beware of Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with safeties sitting deep and not respecting the run fake, these shells take away the deep shot and force you to check down into coverage. Watch for user controlled defenders spying the play fake or sitting in a lurk position over the middle, a smart human opponent will often ignore the run fake and stay home to jump the underneath route or the intermediate window.

Usage Tips

Call this play after you have run actual Jet Sweep or HB Misdirection at least once so the defense has a run key to bite on, since the fake carries much more weight when there is tape on the tendency.

Use pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if a defender follows the jet motion man across the formation you know you are getting man coverage and should trust your deep route to win on a footrace.

Hot route the underneath receiver into a quick out or drag if you diagnose a hard blitz, giving yourself a quick answer against nano blitzes and interior pressure that beats the play fake before the shot route develops.

Best called on early downs like first or second and medium when defenses are more willing to sell out on run support and safeties are more likely to bite on the fake.

Sequence this with HB Power O or Tight Zone Wk earlier in a drive so linebackers start flowing hard to the sweep side, then dial up PA Jet Sweep to hit the play fake window when they overcommit.
