X Dagger out of Singleback Doubles pairs a deep dig from the X receiver at the top of the route tree with a clearing vertical seam from the inside receiver, creating a natural high low that stresses the middle of the field. The outside receiver to the right runs a quick out breaking route to hold the flat defender, while the RB releases into the flat as a checkdown or blocks depending on protection needs, and the TE/slot runs an in breaking crosser underneath. This is a man and zone beater built around the dagger combo (seam clear into dig), so the primary read is the vertical seam route to see if it pulls the linebacker or safety before working down to the dig sitting behind that vacated zone.
Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow the dig route will sit in a soft window right behind him. Identify single high safety look presnap since Cover 3 leaves a natural hole for the dig to settle into once the seam clears vertically. Track any user controlled defender flowing to the deep middle, a rover or lurk defender sitting on the dig is the biggest coverage disruption to this concept. Cover 2 with aggressive corners jumping the out route can be baited if the QB pump fakes to the flat first, opening the window for the dig behind the corner. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed if the seam route wins outside leverage, forcing a blown coverage or a big gain before the dig read even develops.
Pre-snap, check for two-high shells since the seam route is designed to pull a safety or linebacker out of the dig window before you throw underneath it.
Use the seam runner as your peek read against man coverage, but treat it strictly as a clear-out route versus zone to open the dig for your primary throw.
Hot route the flat or out route to a quick slant if you see press man on the outside receiver so you have an answer against aggressive corners.
This play works best on second and medium to third and long since the dig needs time to develop and the seam has to threaten depth first.
Pair X Dagger with Curl Flats or Double Slants earlier in a drive so defenders start sitting on shorter routes, then hit the dig for an explosive gain when they bite.
