Defensive Reads

Watch the deep safety over the dagger side at the snap, if he stays flat footed reading the quarterback instead of clearing with the seam route, he is sitting on the dig throw. Check linebacker depth before the snap, shallow linebackers with tight zone drops can undercut the dig sit route if they read the quarterback's eyes quickly. Look for a user-controlled defender lurking in the middle of the field, since the dig route crosses through the natural lurk zone and is vulnerable to a jumped throw. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest weakness for this play, since the seam route can be taken away and the dig has no easy zone window to settle into. Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify two deep safeties versus one deep safety to decide if the dig will have room to sit in the middle of the field. Against Cover 2, key the deep safety to your dagger side, if he stays deep and does not jump the dig, throw the seam window created by the clear-out route before the corner can recover. Against Cover 3, the deep dig is your primary answer since it settles in the natural hole between the flat, curl, and deep third defenders. Use the drag underneath as a built-in answer to zone blitzes or when the box shows a heavy pass rush look, it gives you a quick outlet without needing to hold the ball. Pair this play with Four Verticals and Slot Seam in the same set so the defense has to respect the vertical seam every snap, then come back to X Dagger to let the dig work off that tendency in third and medium to long situations.
