HB Stretch out of Singleback Doubles is an outside zone run play designed to get the HB working laterally toward the sideline before he presses a crease upfield. The diagram shows the offensive line flowing horizontally in unison with zone steps while the HB takes a lateral path behind them, reading blocks from the playside edge back inside as run fits develop. This is a run play, not a man or zone pass beater, and the primary read progression starts with the playside tackle and TE combo block, then works inside to the guard and center reach blocks to find the first crease that opens.
Watch for user controlled defensive ends crashing hard down the line, since that is the primary counter to outside zone and can blow up the stretch before it develops. Check linebacker depth pre-snap, if the Mike and Will are sitting shallow and flowing fast with the zone steps, the cutback lane inside will be there. Look at safety alignment, a single high safety cheating toward the boundary can signal an edge blitz or contain rush designed to string the play out. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined edge players tend to shut this down by forcing the HB to bounce into extra defenders. Man coverage with linebackers in run support is where this play thrives, since second level defenders are occupied with man responsibilities instead of flowing freely to the ball.
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to check if the defense is running a hard edge set or crashing the DE inside before the snap. If the defense shows a heavy box with 7 or more defenders, consider hot routing the TE to chip and release instead of sitting on the double team. This play excels on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when you want to set up play-action later in the drive. Pair HB Stretch with PA Stretch and Zone Fake Jet from the same set so the defense has to respect the same zone steps on pass and misdirection concepts. Against aggressive edge defenders, bounce the HB outside earlier since the stretch blocking naturally overloads the perimeter. Mix in HB Cutback and HB Wide Draw in the same series to keep second level defenders honest against the lateral flow.
