Y Cross out of Shotgun Spread 10 personnel shows a five man route concept built around the deep crossing route from the backside X, who runs a shallow drag toward the far sideline before the routes even develop, working underneath the vertical stem on the left. On the strong side, the near slot runs a deep post/dig that cuts hard across the middle of the field (the red route) as the primary crosser, while the outside receiver on that side runs a deep out to the boundary and the tight end releases to the flat before working upfield on a wheel-style route. The backside receivers run a vertical seam and a shallow crossing route underneath, giving quarterbacks a true field-stretching combo with high low crossers. This is a man beater at heart, using natural rub picks off the crossing routes to shake off man defenders, though the deep dig also gives you a window against zone if the linebackers sink too far.
Presnap, check safety alignment: if you see two high safeties sitting deep with no clear rotation, that usually means Cover 2 or Cover 4, both of which struggle with the deep dig sitting between the hashes. Watch the strong side linebacker depth before the snap, since a linebacker sitting shallow signals he may be responsible for jumping the underneath crosser or flat route. Post snap, key the middle linebacker's drop: if he sinks hard to cover the deep dig, that opens the shallow drag on the opposite side for an easy checkdown. Look for user controlled defenders lurking in the shallow crossing lane, since aggressive human defenders will often sit on the drag route to bait a turnover, so be ready to reset to the deep dig or the flat route instead. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can undercut the flat/wheel combo on the strong side, so if you see the corner sink into the flat quickly, look immediately to the deep crosser for a bigger gain over the middle.
Presnap, identify whether the defense is showing man or zone by checking cornerback depth and linebacker spacing over the slot. Against man coverage, trust the deep crosser (red route) since the natural traffic from the underneath routes creates separation as defenders fight through picks. Against zone, especially Cover 3 or Cover 4, look to hit the shallow drag or the flat/wheel combo on the strong side since those routes settle into soft spots before linebackers can rotate over. Use hot routes to convert the backside seam into a hot read if you see a blitz off the edge, since the quick access route gives you a checkdown against pressure looks. Pair this play with quicker throws like Y Stick or Quick Slants in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect underneath speed before you go back to the deep dig on Y Cross, keeping the picture fresh for the safety over the middle.
