Fake Jet HB Wheel is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset that opens with jet motion across the formation before the QB fakes the handoff to sell run action. Off the fake, the HB releases into a wheel route up the sideline while two receivers run vertical routes on the far side and a TE or WR runs a deep dig/crosser underneath the seam, with the offensive line sliding to protect against the run fit defenders are baited into. This is primarily a man beater, since the jet motion and run fake are designed to pull linebackers and safeties out of position, and the HB wheel is the clear first read against man coverage or overaggressive run defense, with the vertical routes as the progression check if the wheel is taken away.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and whether they are cheating toward the jet motion side, since that flow opens the wheel lane. Identify single-high safety looks or man coverage on the HB, as this is where the wheel route creates the biggest mismatch. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in a lurk spot near the flat, since that can jump the wheel route early. Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells with disciplined linebackers staying home against the run fake will limit the wheel and force a checkdown to the vertical routes. Watch for blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the play-action fake can be exposed if protection is beaten before the wheel develops.
Usage Tips
Use the jet motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into flowing toward the fake before the QB pivots to the wheel route.
Attack man coverage or single-high looks where the HB wheel can win against a slower linebacker matchup.
If the defense shows two-deep shell, progress off the wheel quickly and work the vertical routes on the far side of the field since the wheel window shrinks against zone.
Call this on early downs or in run-heavy personnel counts (12 personnel) to maximize the play-action freeze on second level defenders.
