Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the linebacker depth and alignment, if the Mike and Will are stacked tight to the line in run support this play has a tougher path since Duo relies on climbing to the second level cleanly. Watch for safety rotation into the box, if a defense shows a run blitz or brings a safety down as an extra run defender, the numbers advantage disappears and this play should be checked into a pass. Post-snap, user controlled defenders who shoot gaps aggressively can blow up the double team before the second level climb happens, so quick penetration is the biggest killer of Duo runs. This play struggles against odd fronts with a true nose lined up over center and stacked linebackers behind, since it removes the clean double team angle that Duo needs. Usage Tips
Check the defensive front pre-snap and look for six or fewer defenders in the box before calling this play, since Duo thrives against light fronts and gets stonewalled by stacked eight man boxes.
Use motion or a shift out of Wing Tight to identify if the defense is playing man or zone leverage on the TE and wing, which tells you whether the edge will be soft for a potential cutback.
Pair 26 Duo with PA Power O and PA Ctr Waggle from the same Wing Tight set so linebackers have to respect both the downhill run action and the play action boot, keeping them honest and slower to fill gaps.
This play works best on early downs in normal down and distance situations like first and ten or second and short, where defenses are more likely to be in base personnel rather than nickel or dime sub packages.
