PA Mills is a play-action deep shot concept out of Singleback Wing Tight that pairs a Mills route (deep post combined with an underneath dig) on one side with a corner or vertical stem on the other to stretch the field vertically and horizontally. The play-action fake to the HB holds the linebackers and safeties for a beat, opening throwing lanes for the dig and post. This is a Cover 4 beater designed to attack the seams and post window that quarters coverage naturally leaves vulnerable, with the primary read progressing from the deep post to the underneath dig and finally to the checkdown or backside route if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Identify two high safeties pre-snap as your first indicator of Cover 4 or Cover 2, which is exactly what this play is designed to punish through the post and dig combination. Watch the play side safety after the snap to see if he bites on the run fake, since any hesitation there opens a clean throwing window for the post route. Man coverage with a single high safety is a green light to attack the post immediately since the play action freeze usually creates a step of separation against man defenders. Beware of Cover 3 sky or buzz looks where the underneath zone defender can sit in the passing lane of the dig route, forcing you to hold the ball or adjust to the checkdown.
