Breakdown

Quick Slant out of Singleback Wing Tight is a quick pass play built around a three man route combo to the boundary. The tight end aligned in the wing runs a hard slant across the middle, while the outside receiver to that side and the receiver on the opposite side both run go routes that stretch the defense vertically and hold the corners deep. The backside slot or attached receiver runs a short vertical stem to occupy the underneath defender near the line. This is a man beater designed to get instant separation on the slant against man coverage leverage, with the primary read being the slant first, then working to the vertical shots if the middle of the field is clogged.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender and the middle linebacker at the snap, since a hard flow toward the slant window signals a blitz or aggressive man call you need to release the ball into quickly. If the corner over the slant receiver presses at the line, expect the route to break open fast inside, so time your throw before the window closes. Zone shells with a linebacker sitting in the passing lane can jump the slant, so check the depth of the underneath zone defender before committing to that read. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with deep help over the top will not stop the slant but can rally fast, so throw with anticipation rather than waiting for full separation. If the defense shows a nano blitz look pre snap, get the ball out on time to the slant since this route concept is built to beat pressure before it arrives.

Usage Tips

Get the ball out fast on the slant since this play is designed to counter blitzes and press man before the pass rush closes the pocket.

Check pre snap for man coverage indicators like a corner shaded inside or a linebacker cheating toward the flat, since the slant wins hardest against man leverage.

If you see two high safeties sitting soft, consider hot routing the slant to a deeper option or peeking the backside vertical for a bigger chunk play.

Pair this play with HB Dive or HB Inside Zone from the same formation to keep defenses honest on early downs before hitting them with the quick slant on a passing down.

Use this on third and short or second and medium when you need a safe, high percentage completion that also carries big play potential if the safety bites on run action.
