WR Option out of Singleback Wing Tight lines up with a wing tight end and shows a true option route on the backside receiver, breaking off his stem based on the leverage and depth of the defender covering him. On the frontside, the outside receiver runs a deep comeback while the wing releases vertically up the seam, and the backside slot runs a shallow drag underneath everything to hold linebackers. This is a man beater at its core since the option route lives off reading man leverage, but it also has answers versus soft zone thanks to the comeback and drag underneath. Primary read progression starts with the option route, then works to the seam route if the defense rolls coverage away from the option side, with the shallow drag as the checkdown against pressure.

Defensive Reads

Watch the cornerback across from the option receiver before the snap, if he is playing tight man press expect the option to break inside or sit down quickly. Key the flow of the linebackers after the snap, if they widen out to cover the shallow drag it opens a throwing lane for the option route working vertical. Look for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, this is the biggest threat to the option concept since it can undercut both the option break and the drag. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with deep safeties can bracket the comeback route, so if you see two high safeties held at depth, expect the throw to funnel toward the option or the drag underneath instead. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge threaten this play in max protect looks, so check the box count and be ready to hit the shallow drag as a quick outlet if the protection cannot hold up.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing man or zone by checking corner alignment on the option receiver, tight press or off coverage tells you which way he is likely to break. Against man coverage let the option route work naturally and trust the user AI or manual read to sit or break outside based on the defender's hip. Versus zone shells, especially Cover 3 or Cover 4, prioritize the comeback route since it settles in the void behind the underneath zone defenders. Use this on second and medium or third and short since the shallow drag gives you a built in checkdown if the option route gets jumped by a lurking linebacker.
