PA TE Cross is a play-action pass out of Singleback Wing Tight that uses run action to freeze the second level while a crossing tight end works the middle of the field. The tight end runs a deep crosser from one side of the formation all the way across the field, giving you a natural man beater against man coverage due to the traffic created at the mesh point. On the backside, one outside receiver runs a deep vertical/go route while the other release attacks the flat/corner area, stretching zone defenders horizontally and vertically. The primary read progression starts with the TE cross working across the field, then works to the vertical shot route if the crosser gets picked off by a robber or if you see a one on one matchup deep.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells since a two high shell often signals a robber sitting underneath waiting to jump the crosser. Watch the flat defender and curl to flat zone linebacker, if he sits and squats on the crosser's path the play is compromised and you should progress to the vertical shot route. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the ideal look, the crosser should separate quickly off contact and traffic near the line. Zone blitzes that bring extra rushers off the edge can disrupt the play action timing, so a fast interior blitz with a spy on the tight end shuts this down. Watch for user controlled defenders sitting in the shallow crossing lane, if the user jumps the route early you need to have already progressed your eyes to the deep vertical option on the backside.

Usage Tips

Sell the run fake by holding the ball and letting the play action animation play out fully before your first read, this manipulates linebacker depth and opens the crosser. Use this on early downs like first or second and medium to keep defenses honest against your run game in Wing Tight. Check the flat defender and underneath linebackers before the snap, if you see a defender sitting in the crosser lane, hot route the tight end to a shorter option or check down to the flat route instead. Against man coverage, trust the TE cross to win versus linebackers thanks to natural rub potential from the formation traffic. Pair this play with HB Inside Zone or HB Ace Power from the same set to set up the play action fake, then mix in PA Boot Left or PA Y Sail later in a series to keep the defense guessing on which way the pocket or crosser will flow.
