Dagger is a classic vertical shot concept built off a deep dig and a seam/post clear-out stacked on the same side, designed to attack the intermediate middle of the field. The outside receiver runs a vertical seam or post to occupy the deep safety while the inside receiver sits down on a hard dig around 12-15 yards, sitting right behind linebackers and in front of safeties. This is primarily a man beater and Cover 3 beater, since it isolates the dig runner against a linebacker in man or exploits the seam-to-flat void in a three deep shell, and the primary read progression starts with the dig route, then works to the corner route or checkdown to the flat/backfield outlet if the middle is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Watch the deep safety alignment at the snap, if he stays home in the middle of the field it signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, and the dig route should have space to settle in behind the linebackers. Key the cornerback over the vertical route, if he presses and turns to run with the seam or post, that opens the throwing lane for the dig since the safety will likely be occupied deep. Track the middle linebacker or nickel defender who has to cover the dig in man coverage, a lurking user defender sitting in this zone can jump the route and cause a turnover if the quarterback stares it down too long. This concept struggles against Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells with two deep safeties who can rob the dig route from depth, so be ready to check down or reset the play if you see quarters coverage presnap. Blitz packages that bring extra defenders through the A or B gaps can disrupt the timing needed for the dig to develop, so identify overload blitz looks presnap and consider a hot route or quick game answer instead.
Usage Tips
Presnap, identify whether the safety is playing a two high shell or rotating to single high, since Dagger thrives when the safety has to respect the vertical clear out route and opens the window for the dig.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you diagnose Cover 2, this keeps the underneath defender honest and gives you a quick answer versus a hard flat squeeze.
Use play action or motion from plays like PA Y Sail or PA Boot Slide earlier in a series to condition the defense to bite on run action, then come back to Dagger to hit the dig route with linebackers cheating up.
This play excels on second and long or third and medium situations where you need a chunk gain over the middle, since the dig sits down in soft zones and creates YAC opportunities after the catch.
Pair Dagger with Mesh Spot or Quick Slant in your play-calling sequence to keep the defense guessing between quick game and shot plays, forcing user defenders to commit early and open up the intermediate middle.
