Dagger is a two-level shot concept built off a deep dig and a vertical seam or post working the intermediate area to create a natural high-low read on zone defenders. The vertical route occupies the deep safety while the dig sits down in the void behind the linebackers and in front of the deep coverage, and the outside receivers run off the corners to open the middle of the field. This is a pure pass play designed as a Cover 2 beater and Cover 3 beater, with the primary read progression starting on the deep vertical to hold the safety before working down to the dig once the throwing lane opens.

Defensive Reads

Read the deep safety first, since if he stays flat footed or bites on the vertical route, the window for the dig will open up quickly behind the linebackers. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, because if they sink too deep in zone drops they leave the shallow crossing and flat routes wide open for an easy checkdown. Against Cover 3, key the flat defender and the deep third corner, since Dagger is designed to split the seam between them once the vertical route clears the underneath zone. Man coverage with a single high safety is where this play struggles the most, so look for user-controlled defenders lurking in the middle of the field who can jump the dig route before it develops. Blitz-heavy fronts with man coverage behind them will pressure the quarterback before the dig has time to break, so account for hot routes or a check release protection if you see linebackers stacked at the line pre-snap.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and long or third and medium when you need to attack the intermediate middle of the field with a chunk gain. Pre-snap, identify whether you are facing a single high safety or two high shell, since Dagger is designed to punish exactly those Cover 2 and Cover 3 structures. If the safety cheats over the top of the vertical route, come off your first read immediately and work the dig, which will be sitting in the soft spot behind the linebackers. Hot route the underneath outlet or check release the running back to give yourself a quick answer against disguised blitzes or when the pocket collapses early. Pair Dagger with Mesh Spot or Y Stick in your play-calling sequence, since those quick game concepts look similar pre-snap but attack shallow zones, keeping the defense honest and forcing them to respect both levels of the field.
