PA Y Throwback is a play-action shot play out of Singleback Wing Tight that sells run action before attacking the backside with a deep crossing route. The Y (tight end) runs the throwback route, working from the strong side across the formation and up the seam on the backside, while the outside receiver on that side runs a corner or go route to hold the deep defender, and the wing back runs a flat route underneath to hold the flat defender. The blocking scheme keeps the offensive line and wing in run fits to sell the fake, and the primary read progression starts with the Y Throwback crosser as the shot play, working to the flat route as the checkdown if the throwback is covered.

Defensive Reads

Read the middle linebacker at the snap. If he bites hard on the run fake, the throwback crosser will beat him to the seam every time. Identify single high safety looks before the snap. Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells leave the backside crosser vulnerable once the fake pulls the strong side of the defense. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the throwback lane. A smart user player will sit in the passing lane and jump the crosser, so have the flat route as your answer. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 zone drops, the corner route on the outside occupies the deep defender, but the Y Throwback route can get squeezed if the defense sinks a linebacker into the throwback window. Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge can disrupt the play-action fake timing, so watch the defensive ends and outside linebackers for an early jump off the snap.

Run this on early downs like 1st or 2nd and short to medium to keep the defense honest against the play-action fake.

Check the linebacker depth pre-snap. If the backside linebacker is sitting shallow or cheating toward the run fake, the Y Throwback route will have a wide open throwing lane.

Use the flat route as a built-in checkdown against zone shells where the throwback crosser gets picked up by a deep zone defender.

Pair this play with HB Inside Zone or HB Ace Power earlier in a series so the defense starts respecting the run action, making the play-action fake on PA Y Throwback more effective.
