Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high shell, since a single high safety often signals man coverage that opens up the comeback route against a trailing corner. Watch the flat defender and outside linebacker to the play side rollout direction, if they crash hard on the run fake the underneath crosser and flat will be wide open immediately. Post-snap, key the curl/flat zone defender on the left side, a smart zone defender will sit on the comeback route and rob the deep read, forcing you to check down to the crosser or TE seam. This play struggles against disciplined zone coverage that keeps a defender on a spy or flat responsibility, since it removes the easy underneath answer and clogs the rollout lane. Watch for edge blitzes or contain defenders crashing off the play side, since a fast contain rush can collapse the rollout before routes fully develop, forcing an early checkdown or scramble.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or second and medium to sell the run fake off Wing Tight since the formation naturally threatens HB Inside Zone and HB Power looks from the same set.

Check the flat and curl/flat defenders before the snap. If a corner is sitting low on the sideline route, work the TE seam route immediately instead of forcing the comeback.

Roll with the QB and use the rollout mechanic to extend the play if the pocket edge collapses, this buys time for the deep comeback to develop against zone coverage.

Hot route the backside crosser into a deeper drag if you are facing man coverage with no underneath help, it creates natural separation against linebackers trailing from depth.
