Identify if the defense is in man coverage pre-snap by checking if a linebacker or slot corner is aligned tight on the fullback or wing, this is your green light to throw the wheel. Watch for Cover 3 or Cover 1 shells where the flat defender or curl to flat player has to cover both the wheel and the shallow drag, forcing a horizontal stretch that man coverage cannot handle. Against zone coverage, especially Cover 2 or Cover 4, the deep half safety can sit on the wheel route and turn this into a low value underneath completion, so check the deep crosser as your zone beater instead. Key the middle linebacker post snap, if he bites hard on the run fake and turns his back to the wheel release, that is the throw window before he can recover. Beware disguised blitzes where the defense shows run support numbers but is actually bringing extra rushers, since the play action fake takes longer to develop and can get the quarterback hit before the wheel route sets up.
