Mesh Spot out of Singleback Wing Tight lines up with two receivers running crossing mesh routes underneath while a third runs a corner route from the slot, and the backside X runs a deep vertical up the sideline. The wing back releases into a shallow flat/spot route for a quick outlet, giving the quarterback a full-field progression from the deep vertical to the mesh crossers to the flat check down. This is a classic man beater built off natural rub picks from the mesh concept, but the spacing underneath also gives it enough separation to work against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Check the corner alignment on the backside X receiver, if he is playing off with outside leverage the deep vertical route can win over the top. Watch for a linebacker or safety sitting in the mesh area, a lurking defender can jump the crossing routes and bait the quarterback into a turnover. Identify blitz packages pre-snap since the mesh crossers naturally pick off man defenders trying to chase through traffic, which slows down disguised pressure. Cover 3 defenses can be vulnerable if the deep middle safety bites on the mesh action, leaving the vertical route isolated on a single deep defender. If the defense shows a two high shell with linebackers sitting shallow, the flat route from the wing back becomes the quickest and safest read.

Usage Tips

Read the safety shell before the snap to decide whether to prioritize the deep vertical route or work the mesh underneath.

If you see man coverage, trust the mesh crossers to rub off defenders and create natural separation for whichever receiver clears the traffic first.

Against zone, hot route the corner route runner to sit down in the soft spot behind the mesh if the safety rotates away from him.

This play pairs well with Dagger and PA Y Sail in the same set since both attack similar zone drops but give you a vertical shot instead of the quick mesh look.

Use this on early downs to stay ahead of the chains, and save it as a chain mover on third and medium since the mesh combo consistently creates YAC opportunities.
