Breakdown

TE Option out of Singleback Wing Tight lines up the TE with an option route off the line, breaking outside and up the seam based on the leverage of the flowing defender, giving the QB a built-in man beater at the second level. The backside receiver runs a deep post while the slot runs a quick out to the flat, and the boundary receiver runs an out and up double move to stretch the corner vertically. The running back releases on a shallow drag underneath, giving the QB a checkdown against blitz or heavy zone drops. Primary read starts with the TE option route since it exploits leverage against man coverage, then works to the post if the safety bites on the underneath routes, with the RB drag as the final outlet.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the MIKE sits shallow and reads the TE quickly the option route becomes a low value throw and you should progress to the post. Identify single high versus two high shells before the snap, single high alignments tell you the deep post has a bracket risk while the TE option is more open against man leverage. Post snap, track any user controlled defender flashing down into the shallow drag lane, that lurk threat kills the RB checkdown and forces you to speed up your reads to the option or out route. Zone teams that sink a linebacker into the option route's landmark will force an early decision, so recognize a Tampa 2 or Cover 3 sink and redirect to the flat or post immediately. Blitz heavy defenses that bring five or six rushers open up the option route fast since the TE's defender often has conflicting run/pass assignments, exploit that against nano blitz packages by getting the ball out on time.

Usage Tips

Motion the TE pre-snap if possible to identify man versus zone before the snap, since the option route only truly wins against man coverage or seam defenders with poor eyes.

Use this play on second and medium to third and short distances since the option route and out and up combo need field to develop but do not require a deep drop.

If you see two deep safeties, key the corner over the option route side, if he stays outside expect the TE to break inside for an easy conversion.

Pair this with PA Y Sail or PA Boot Left in the same set to keep defenders honest on run fits while still hitting the same option concept off similar formation looks.

Hot route the slot receiver's out route into a speed out if you are facing a hard match zone team, this gives you a faster access throw underneath before the safety can rotate down.
