Fake HB Zone QB Boot is a play-action rollout out of Singleback Wing Tight that sells inside zone action before the QB boots to the flat. The line and TE fake blocking assignments to sell the run, while the diagram shows a single deep route breaking outside up the sideline as the QB rolls out with room to throw or tuck it and run. This is a play-action shot play designed to punish run fits and overaggressive linebackers, with the primary read being the outside vertical release off the boot, then the QB's legs as the checkdown option if the coverage sinks deep.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a run-heavy front with linebackers crashing downhill, since this play is built to exploit exactly that overcommitment. Watch the strong safety and outside cornerback leverage before the snap, if they are playing tight run support technique they will get beat on the vertical break to the boot side. Post-snap, track any user-controlled defender spying the QB or shadowing the boot lane, as a disciplined contain defender or lurking linebacker can blow this play up before the route develops. Zone coverage shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with linebackers reading run flow are the most vulnerable, since the flow to the run side opens up the boot window before zone defenders can redirect. Man coverage with a disciplined edge defender staying home on the QB, or a defense that plays containment on both sides of the play fake, will take away the rollout and force a scramble drill.
Call this on early downs like first or second and short to mid distance when defenses are keying run based on personnel and formation tendencies.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see a single high safety cheating toward the box or linebackers stacked tight to the line, this play has a great chance to hit the boot route wide open.
Use the rollout to buy time against edge pressure since the boot naturally moves the QB away from backside rushers, making it a strong answer to nano blitzes coming from the play side edge.
Pair this with HB Inside Zone and HB Draw earlier in a drive so the defense starts biting on the run action, then hit this play action shot when you see linebackers flowing hard downhill.
If the corner sits deep in zone, hot route the boot receiver into a comeback or use the QB's legs on the edge since most defenses leave a running lane open when they respect the play fake.
