Breakdown

PA Boot is a play-action bootleg out of Singleback Wing Tight that pulls the QB away from the play fake to buy time against aggressive run defense. Off the fake, the outside receiver runs a deep comeback/corner route (red), the inline TE releases on a deep crossing route working from the strong side to the far boundary (yellow, top), the wing TE runs a flat to corner breakout route (yellow, right), and the backside receiver runs an out breaking route underneath (white). The primary read progression starts with the deep red corner route against single high shells, works down to the crossing route if the corner is capped, and checks down to the flat/out routes underneath if the pocket collapses on the roll.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a single high safety pre snap, since that tips man or Cover 3 and opens the corner route on the boot side. Key the flow of the linebackers after the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake the crossing route will come open behind them for a big gain. Identify user controlled defenders spying the QB roll, since a disciplined spy or contain defender can shut down the boot and force a checkdown. Look for Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with corners sitting deep, which can squeeze the comeback and corner routes and force the QB to the underneath flat. Recognize edge blitzes or overload pressure to the boot side pre snap, since this play design struggles when the QB has no room to roll and set his feet.

Usage Tips

Sell the run fake with the RB before rolling out, since selling the fake freezes linebackers and opens the crossing route behind them.

Use this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when defenses are keyed to stop the run, since the play action holds safeties and linebackers longer.

If you read two high safeties pre snap, prioritize the deep crosser or the corner route sideline shot since zone defenders will be spread thinner underneath.

Pair PA Boot with HB Inside Zone and HB Power O earlier in a series so the run fake carries real weight and linebackers bite harder on the boot action.

Hot route the flat route into a quick out if you see man coverage from a slot corner, giving the QB an instant answer if the deep routes are covered.
