Breakdown

PA Boot is a play-action rollout out of Singleback Wing Tight that pulls the QB to the right edge behind a boot fake, giving him a three-level read to that side. The outside receiver runs a deep corner route, the tight end works a delayed out breaking underneath it, and the fullback releases into the flat as the checkdown, while the backside receiver runs a deep dig across the field as a hold-up option away from the boot action. Blocking flows away from the rollout to sell the run fake, making this a play-action man and zone beater built around horizontal stretch to the flood side. Primary progression is corner to out to flat, with the backside dig as a late alert if the defense rolls coverage hard to the boot side.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flow of the linebackers at the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake the flat and out routes will be wide open underneath. Key the safety on the boot side, if he stays deep and shifts to the corner route the tight end out becomes the primary conversion throw. Man coverage on the tight end is vulnerable to the out cut, look for a linebacker or safety in man trailing the release for an easy pitch and catch. Watch for a defensive end or edge rusher staying home and not biting on the fake, that player can contain the rollout and force an early checkdown or throwaway. If the defense shows two deep safeties pre snap and rotates late, the corner route can get squeezed, so be ready to work back to the backside dig against the vacated middle.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs or second and short so the run fake actually holds linebackers and safeties for a beat before they diagnose pass.

Check the flow of the second and third level defenders pre snap, if the strength is set to the boot side you are throwing into a crowd, so consider flipping the play or checking to the backside dig.

Use the tight end out route as your rhythm throw against zone drops that widen for the corner route, it is the easiest completion in the concept.

Pair this with HB Inside Zone or HB Power O earlier in a series so the run fake off the same look sells harder and defenders bite on the boot.

Combine with PA Boot Slide or PA Roll Lt in your call sheet so opponents cannot key on rollout direction just from formation.
