PA Boot Left is a play-action rollout out of Singleback Wing Tight that pulls the QB to the left edge behind a boot fake, selling the run action from 13 personnel before rolling out. The route concept typically features a flood look to the boot side with a deep out or corner from the backside receiver, an intermediate crosser or flat route from the TE/wing, and a check down from the running back leaking out to the flat. This is a play-action man and zone beater that hunts leverage on the roll side, with the primary read starting at the deepest route on the boot side and working down to the flat/check down if the window is late.

Defensive Reads

Read the flow of the linebackers immediately after the snap, if they bite on the run fake and flow toward the strong side, the crosser or drag route underneath will be wide open. Identify single high safety shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1 pre-snap, this concept is designed to attack the seam and flood zone vacated when the safety has to respect the run action. Watch for a user controlled defender spying the QB on the boot side, aggressive defenders who key the rollout and jump the flat route will take away the easy checkdown, so be ready to go over the top to the deep out or corner. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells, look for the corner sinking into his deep quarter or half, this can open a soft spot underneath for the drag or flat route if the boot side linebacker gets pulled by run action. Beware of overload blitzes or edge pressure sent right at the boot side, if the defense shows a blitz look with extra rushers to the play action side, expect them to bring pressure quickly and be ready to get the ball out fast or check down.

Usage Tips

Run this from run-heavy personnel looks after establishing HB Inside Zone or HB Power O to get linebackers and safeties flowing downhill on run fits so the boot action freezes them.

Check the strong safety and single high defender before the snap, if they are sitting flat footed or cheating to the play call side, the boot flood concept to the opposite side will open up big throwing lanes.

Use this on early downs or in normal down and distance situations, second and medium or first and ten are ideal since defenses are more likely to play run fits and bite on the fake.

If you see man coverage with the corner playing outside leverage, hot route the flat route to a speed out or drag to create instant separation off the roll.

Pair this with PA Roll Lt and PA Boot Slide in the same series, once the defense starts jumping the boot flood, come back with PA Boot Slide to hit the shorter underneath route for a quicker developing answer.

Roll the QB with a purpose, do not float outside the tackle box for too long against edge defenders who play the boot aggressively, get the ball out on time to the first open window.
