Zone Fake Jet is a play-action shot play out of Singleback Wing Tight that sells jet motion and outside zone flow before the QB rolls out. The diagram shows only one route in the pattern: a receiver breaking off the line at a slight angle before turning vertical up the sideline, while the QB drifts flat down the line of scrimmage on the play-action fake path. This is a low-route-count boot design meant to hold the backside defense with the run fake and hit a vertical shot on the front side, so the primary read is that single vertical release off the play-action fake with the QB rollout as the checkdown outlet if the window is not there.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two high safeties or a single high shell, since single high defenses are more vulnerable to the vertical route breaking open behind flowed linebackers. Watch linebacker depth and spacing before the snap: stacked or crashing linebackers signal they are keying run and will bite on the jet fake, creating the window for the vertical release. Post-snap, key the flow of the second level defenders toward the jet motion side, if they overpursue the run fake the vertical route has a clean throwing lane against zone coverage. Man coverage with press corners can jump the vertical stem early, so look for a cornerback trailing tight off the snap as a sign this route may get contested at the catch point. Disciplined defenses that spy the QB rollout lane or bring a contain blitz off the edge can collapse the boot action quickly, so recognize edge pressure showing pre-snap as a signal to get the ball out fast or check down.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs like 1st or 2nd and short to medium yardage when defenses are still respecting the run fake and jet motion. Check the safety depth pre-snap: if you see a single high safety cheating toward the jet motion side, the play-action boot has a clean throwing lane away from the rotation. Motion the jet man across pre-snap to bait linebackers and safeties into flowing with the fake, which opens the vertical route shown in the diagram. Hot route the backside receivers into quick outs or drags if you diagnose man coverage, since the base concept only shows one true route and you need extra outlets against blitz-heavy fronts. Pair this with HB Inside Zone or Jet Sweep earlier in a drive so the defense keys run action, then dial up Zone Fake Jet to punish overaggressive run fits with the play-action shot.
