HB Ace Power is a gap scheme run out of Singleback Wing Tight that pulls the backside guard through the hole to lead block for the HB, with the fullback and tight end sealing the point of attack on the strong side. The diagram shows the HB taking a slight lead step before hitting the hole downhill behind the pulling guard, with the offensive line combo blocking down to create a clean rushing lane. This is a run play with no route combos or pass options attached, designed to win with numbers and angle blocks at the point of attack rather than beating coverage. Primary read progression is simple: press the hole, read the pulling guard's block, and cut off his hip based on which way the linebacker flows.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a stacked box with a linebacker cheating into the play side gap, this is the primary indicator the defense has identified the power concept and will blow it up at the mesh point. Look for edge defenders crashing hard down inside pre-snap, which signals a run blitz designed to beat the pulling guard before he can get outside. Check safety depth before the snap, a safety creeping into the box at eight yards or closer often means an extra run defender is coming on a fill blitz. Post-snap, key the flow of the linebackers, if they flow hard to the play side immediately without hesitation the defense has diagnosed the pull scheme and you should look to cut back against the grain. This play is neutralized by odd front gap exchange stunts and overload blitzes to the play side since the puller loses his blocking angle against penetration.
Usage Tips
Run this play against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box since the extra gap created by the pulling guard needs numbers to overwhelm the front. Check the Mike linebacker's alignment pre-snap, if he is stacked directly over the play side guard, consider audibling to HB Counter Wk to attack the opposite gap instead. Use HB Ace Power on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage situations to keep the defense honest and set up your play-action shots later in the drive. Pair this with PA Power O and PA Ctr Waggle from the same set since both plays sell the same initial line movement and backfield action, forcing linebackers to hesitate on run fits. Motion the wing or tight end pre-snap if your version of the playbook allows it to get a free look at whether the defense is in man or zone before the snap.
