Breakdown

Dragon Spacing is a classic spacing concept out of Singleback Wing Tight with 13 personnel. The backside X runs a deep comeback off the numbers while the slot receiver and tight end sit down on quick hitches at different depths in the underneath spacing window, and the HB releases from the backfield on a wheel route up the sideline. This is a spacing-based zone beater built to attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 by stretching the underneath zones horizontally, and the primary read progression starts with the shallow hitches, works to the backside comeback, and finishes with the HB wheel as a home run shot against overaggressive underneath defenders.

Defensive Reads

Key the flow of the underneath linebackers and nickel defender at the snap, since Dragon Spacing lives on defenders who drop into shallow zones and hesitate. Watch for a Cover 3 sky or buzz shell, this concept punishes those looks because the curl to flat defenders cannot cover both the hitch and the wheel route from the HB. Check for a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow spacing window, if you see a lurk threat sitting on the underneath hitches, hold the ball and let the comeback or wheel develop instead of forcing the quick throw. Man coverage with press corners can shut this down quickly since the spacing routes rely on soft cushions to sit down in windows. Watch safety depth before the snap, if both safeties are shaded deep with no underneath help, the HB wheel becomes a live vertical shot against blown coverage or missed carry responsibility.

Usage Tips

Presnap identify if the corner over the X is playing off man or a soft zone shell, since the comeback route only creates separation against zone drops or off coverage. Use the flick up or slide protection hot route on the HB if you see a blitz look with more than four defenders showing near the box. Third and short to medium is the ideal down and distance because the spacing hitches sit right at the sticks and give the QB a quick, safe completion versus zone. Pair this play with PA Y Sail or Dagger from the same set to keep the defense honest on double moves after they start jumping the spacing routes. If the defense shows Cover 4 with deep safeties sitting on verticals, target the HB wheel out of the backfield since safeties often bite on the initial spacing action underneath.
