Breakdown

TE Shake is a play action flood concept out of Singleback Wing Tight that attacks Cover 3 and other zone shells with three vertical stems stacked on the same side. The outside receiver runs a Go route to clear the deep third, the TE wheels from the backfield underneath into the flat then up the sideline, and the inside receiver runs a corner route into the same window, while the backside receiver runs a shallow drag away from the flood. The primary read progresses from the corner route to the wheel to the backside drag, working high to low as the QB reads the deep defender's leverage after the play fake.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high versus two high safeties before the snap since two high shells can rob the deep corner route and force you to the wheel or drag underneath. Watch the flat defender or force player after the snap because if he widens with the wheel route it opens a throwing lane for the corner route behind him. Key the middle linebacker's drop on the play fake, a linebacker who bites hard on the run opens the shallow drag as an easy checkdown. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is vulnerable since the Go route can stack the corner and the wheel will win against a linebacker in coverage. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender squatting on the wheel is the main defense that shuts this down, so recognize that squat and reset to the drag route quickly.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety shells pre-snap since the Go route occupying the deep third opens a soft spot for the corner and wheel combo underneath.

Use the play fake to hold linebackers and hold your throw an extra beat if the defense bites on the run action, especially against aggressive run fits.

If the corner presnap shows hard outside leverage, be ready to hot route the corner route into a quick out to beat man coverage on the boundary.

Pair this with HB Inside Zone or 26 Duo earlier in a series so the play fake sells and defenders start cheating up on run downs.

Best called on early downs like first and ten or second and short where defenses are more likely to bite on the run fake and load the box.
