Breakdown

HB Power O out of Singleback Wing Tight 13 personnel is a gap scheme run play that pulls the backside guard to lead through the hole while the offensive line blocks down and seals the frontside. The wing back and fullback duties are handled within the 13 personnel grouping to add an extra lead blocker on the play side, creating a numbers advantage at the point of attack. The diagram shows the HB taking a slight lateral step before hitting the hole downhill off the puller, with a single receiver split wide running a vertical route to hold the deep defender. This is a run play designed to beat light boxes and overly aggressive zone fits, with the primary read being the pulling guard: press the hole, read his block, and cut off his hip.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check linebacker depth, a stacked box with linebackers crashing downhill signals a run blitz that can beat the puller before he reaches the hole. Look for the play side defensive end and outside linebacker squeezing hard, since disciplined edge defenders who stay square can blow up the kick out block and force a cutback. Post-snap, identify if the middle linebacker is reading the pulling guard, a linebacker who fills the hole quickly and does not bite on run action will limit this to minimal gain. Watch the deep safety over the vertical route, if he stays flat footed reading run instead of respecting the release, he becomes a de facto extra run defender. This play struggles against a heavy inside blitz or a defense in a Cover 0 look with linebackers crashing downhill pre-snap, since the puller has less time to reach his block point.

Usage Tips

Run this out of early down and distance situations, especially 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, to keep the defense honest against your play-action shots from the same formation.

Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense has six or more in the box, consider audibling to a bounce path or motioning the wing back to influence the count.

Use the play side puller as your primary read and stay patient behind the line, do not rush the cut before the puller sets his block.

Pair this with PA Power O from the same set so the defense cannot sit on the run action, since both plays share initial line movement and backfield footwork.

Against man coverage, the single receiver's vertical route occupies the corner, so avoid calling this into heavy man alignments with an extra deep safety cheating toward that side.
