Sluggo Seam out of Singleback Wing Tight sends the X receiver on a sluggo (slant and go) up the boundary while the inline TE runs a seam route straight up the middle of the field. The Y receiver to the wing side works an out and up, stemming outside then climbing vertically to attack the deep third from the flat. With five in protection and three verticals stacked at different depths and angles, this is a man beater designed to stack defenders on double moves and win over the top, though it also stretches zone defenders vertically with three deep options. The primary read progression starts with the sluggo route to the X since it attacks the cornerback's hips immediately off the break, then works to the TE seam for a quick vertical shot up the pipe, and finishes with the Y route out and up if the safety bites on the underneath routes.
Defensive Reads
Check the free safety's alignment before the snap, if he is shaded to the sluggo side pre-rotation, expect a two high shell rolling to trap the double move. Watch the cornerback's press technique on the X receiver, if he is playing off man coverage the sluggo will not create the same separation, so lean on the seam read instead. Identify if a linebacker or slot defender walks up on the TE's seam release, this signals man coverage or a robber concept designed to jump the seam route. Post-snap, track the deep safety's eyes and hips, if he flows hard toward the seam route the sluggo should be wide open on the double move. Beware of Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with a deep half or deep third defender sitting on verticals, this coverage can undercut both the seam and the sluggo if the quarterback holds the ball too long.
Usage Tips
Look for single high safety shells pre-snap since this play thrives when the deep middle defender has to choose between the seam and the sluggo breaking outside.
Motion or shift the Y receiver pre-snap to identify if the defense is in man or zone based on whether a defender follows the shift.
Use the sluggo as your primary hot route answer against press man coverage since the double move creates immediate separation once the cornerback commits to the initial slant fake.
Call this on early downs or in play action shot situations rather than obvious passing downs since the deep routes need time to develop and a clean pocket.
Pair this with Dagger or PA Y Sail in the same set to keep the defense honest, using the shorter combo plays to set up defenders biting on the seam or sluggo shot play later in the series.
