Defensive Reads

Look at the flat defender's alignment before the snap; if a linebacker or slot defender is walked out over the wing, this route combo is designed to attack that defender in the flat-to-corner window. Post-snap, key the corner defender's hips and depth: if he sinks and widens to the corner route, the flat route underneath should be wide open against Cover 2 zone drops. Watch for a user-controlled defender lurking in the flat or robbing the corner route from depth, since a disciplined user rover can jump the corner throw and turn it into a turnover. This concept struggles against aggressive Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells with two deep defenders capping the corner route and underneath zone defenders sitting on the flat, so avoid forcing the corner throw if you see a two-deep shell holding firm after the play-action fake.

Use this play on early downs or manageable third-and-medium situations where the play-action fake has credibility against a defense respecting the run.
Read the safeties before the snap: if you see two-high shells sitting deep, the corner route is designed to work the void behind the flat defender and in front of the deep safety, so trust the smash concept.
If the cornerback is playing press or off man coverage, prioritize the corner route immediately off play-action since it is the built-in man beater against trail technique.
Hot route the flat route into a quick out or speed out if you diagnose a hard squat corner from the flat defender, giving the wing an easier release against Cloud Cover 2 or Cover 4 support.
