Breakdown

Stretch Alert X Lookie is an outside zone run out of Singleback Wing Tight with a pre-snap alert that lets you flip to Power Alert X Lookie based on the defensive front, plus an X receiver lookie route tag for a quick answer if the box is stacked. The offensive line executes outside zone landmarks, working combo blocks at the point of attack and reaching playside defenders to create a cutback lane while the fullback or wing kicks out the edge. This is a zone run play, and the primary read is the playside alley: the running back presses the stretch aiming point, reads the reach block on the edge defender, and decides bang, bounce, or bend based on the first level flow of the linebackers.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a stacked or bear front pre-snap, if the defensive tackles are shaded hard into the play side gaps this alert lets you check to Power Alert X Lookie for a more direct blocking answer. Key the flow of the middle linebacker after the snap, if he flows hard playside without hesitation this stretch run has a clean cutback lane behind him. Man coverage on the X receiver with no safety help over the top makes the lookie route an easy underneath completion versus blitz or man pressure looks. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with safeties rotating down into the box can shut down the outside run by adding a extra defender to the edge, in this case lean on the lookie route as your answer. Watch for a user controlled defensive end or outside linebacker crashing down hard on the snap, this is often a sign of a scripted run blitz and the running back should look to bounce it outside immediately rather than pressing the line of scrimmage.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap alert to flip between Stretch Alert X Lookie and Power Alert X Lookie depending on whether the defense shows a light or heavy box, this keeps the defense guessing between zone and gap schemes from the same look.

Check the alignment of the strong side linebacker and defensive end before the snap, if they are crashing hard down the line, bounce the run outside using the stretch aiming point rather than forcing it into a stacked front.

The X lookie route gives you a built in answer versus overloaded boxes or run blitzes, if you see six or seven defenders creeping to the line pre-snap, consider throwing the quick lookie instead of handing it off.

Pair this play with HB Inside Zone and HB Counter Wk from the same set to keep linebackers honest, once they start flowing hard to stop the stretch you can hit them with counter action back the other way.

This works best on early downs in normal or run heavy personnel situations, avoid calling it on clear passing downs where defenses sit back in nickel or dime looks that clog cutback lanes.
