Defensive Reads
Look for two deep safeties pre-snap since this play is designed to punish single-high rotations that leave the post route in a soft spot. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if they step up hard to defend the jet sweep action, that confirms the underneath zones or man defenders are vacated for the post and vertical routes. Identify man coverage by checking if defenders shift or flip with the jet motion before the snap, which signals the go routes have a strong chance to win on double moves. Cover 3 with a deep middle safety can be an issue for the post route since it sits in the deep third, so be ready to work the leverage read outside to the go routes instead. Beware of a user-controlled safety sitting on the post read or a blitz off the edge that collapses the pocket before the play-action fake fully develops, since this negates the deep shot value of the concept.
Usage Tips
Sell the jet sweep fake by holding the run button briefly before committing to the pass so linebackers step up and bite on the misdirection.
Use this on early downs like first and ten or second and medium when defenses expect a run based on the personnel grouping and formation tendencies.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two high safeties rotate to single high after the snap, hit the post route immediately before the deep defender can close.
Pair this with HB Inside Zone and Zone Fake Jet earlier in a drive so the defense keys on the jet motion as a run threat, making the play-action shot more effective later.
If the cornerbacks are pressed at the line with no safety help over the top, throw the outside go route on a back shoulder placement against off-man or press coverage.
