PA Power O sells the Power O run action out of Singleback Wing Tight before releasing three vertical route options into the intermediate and deep areas of the field. The diagram shows the outside receiver on the left running a skinny post to the deep middle, the tight end or wing releasing on a corner route from the backfield area, and the outside receiver on the right stemming vertical before breaking into the numbers on an out and up. This is a play-action shot play designed to punish aggressive run fits and linebackers who bite on the fake, with the primary read progressing from the deep post first, then working to the corner breaking route, and finally the boundary vertical as the checkdown against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Key the play side linebackers immediately after the snap, if they step up hard on the run fake you have a clean throwing window to the post or corner. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high defenses are more vulnerable to the post route since the safety has run responsibility first. Watch for a user controlled defender flying downhill on the fake, this often signals aggressive run blitz and opens the deep middle for the post route. Cover 3 and other zone drop coverages struggle with the combination of post and corner stretching the seams, look for the flat defender getting caught between the corner route and any underneath crossers. Man coverage with inside leverage on the outside receivers gets beat by the skinny post, but watch for a deep half safety rotating over late to rob that throw if you hold the ball too long.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs like first and ten or second and short when the defense expects run based on personnel and formation tendencies.

Check the safety alignment pre snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep the play action fake will not fully move them so prioritize the corner route since it settles into the void behind underneath zone defenders.

Against single high safety looks or run blitz alignments, take the deep post immediately since the play fake should hold the linebackers and the safety has to respect run first.

Pair this with HB Power O and HB Ace Power earlier in a series so the defense keys run fits, then dial up PA Power O once you see linebackers creeping downhill.

Hot route the corner route runner into a deep out if you are facing a Cloud Cover shell, this keeps him away from the flat defender and gives you a simple pitch and catch outside.

Use max protect or slide protection if the opponent shows a heavy blitz package pre snap since the play only has three routes out and needs time to develop downfield.
