HB Plunge out of Singleback Wing Tight is a straight downhill dive run that sends the HB directly north into the A gap immediately after the snap. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking straight ahead with no pulling linemen, relying on the interior of the line to win one on one blocks and create a crease. This is a pure run play designed to pick up short yardage in a hurry, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is simply the A gap: if the initial hole is not there, the HB has to trust his pad level and fall forward for positive yardage rather than trying to bounce it outside.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is running a nano blitz or crashing extra defenders into the A and B gaps, since this play has zero answer for immediate interior pressure. Watch the middle linebacker depth, if he is sitting on the line of scrimmage or creeping forward this play will get blown up before the HB can build momentum. User controlled defenders sitting in the A gap or spying the mesh point are the single biggest threat to this play, since there is no lead blocker or misdirection to manipulate them. Look for base 4-3 or 3-4 defenses in their normal run fits without extra beef in the box, this is where the plunge concept has the best chance to pick up positive yardage. If the defense shows heavy blitz packages or stacks the box pre-snap, this play should be checked out of immediately since the design has no answer for numbers advantage at the point of attack.

Usage Tips

Use HB Plunge on short yardage downs like 3rd or 4th and 1 or 2 when you need a guaranteed push up the middle rather than a home run play.

Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has stacked eight or nine defenders in the box you want to check out of this into a play like PA Boot Slide or Quick Slant to punish an overcommitted front.

Since there is no pulling linemen or misdirection here, this play thrives against base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts that are playing straight downhill rather than shooting gaps, so save it for early down neutral situations too if you want to keep the defense honest between HB Dive and HB Inside Zone.

Pair this play in a sequence with HB Ace Power or HB Power O so the defense has to respect both a quick A gap hit and a slower developing power concept, this keeps second level defenders from crashing down too fast.

Do not call this on 3rd and long, the play has almost no explosive upside and defenses expecting a stop on downs like that will sell out against interior runs.
