HB Power out of Singleback Wing Tight 13 personnel is a gap scheme run play designed to pull a blocker across the formation and create a double team at the point of attack. The play diagram shows the HB taking a slight lateral path before hitting the hole behind the pulling guard, with the wing TE and offensive line executing down blocks to seal the backside and create a lane. This is a pure run play with no pass option, so the primary read progression starts with the pulling guard's kick out block on the edge defender, then bends the run inside or outside based on how the linebackers flow to the point of attack.
Defensive Reads
Check the linebacker depth before the snap, if the Mike and Will are sitting shallow and stacked over the box, they can beat the pulling guard to the hole and blow up the play. Watch for edge defenders crashing hard inside pre-snap, which tells you the play is scouted and you should audible to a bounce outside or check to a different concept entirely. Post-snap, key the pulling guard's block, if he gets stonewalled at the point of attack that signals a user linebacker read the play correctly and you need to cut the run immediately. This play struggles against odd fronts with a true nose tackle who can occupy two gaps and clog the natural running lane. Man coverage shells with a single high safety tend to leave light boxes that favor Power, while two high safety zone shells with extra run support defenders can bracket the point of attack and shut down the lane.
Usage Tips
Run this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep defenses honest against your play-action shots out of this same formation. Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing a heavy box with eight or more defenders since Power struggles against loaded fronts with no numbers advantage. Use the left stick to press the hole and let the pulling guard's kick out block develop before committing to a lane, patience is the key trait for this play. Pair this with PA Power O and HB Ace Power from the same set to keep linebackers guessing on whether the ball is going downhill or bouncing to a play-action shot. Against aggressive linebacker blitzes, consider hot routing the wing TE to chip and release if you need extra protection insurance, but keep the base blocking scheme intact for the strongest hole integrity.
