The TE releases into a short crossing route underneath the trips concept to occupy the middle linebacker, and the primary progression starts with the trips-side slants working from outside in before checking the backside slant against a blitz look.

Defensive Reads

Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as corners aligned tight to the trips receivers with safeties showing single high, this is when the slant stack is most dangerous. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow to jump the crossing route from the TE that opens up the deep slant window on the backside. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells by checking if the slot corner sinks into a zone drop instead of mirroring the receiver, this can clog the underneath slant windows. Use the backside single receiver slant as your blitz beater hot route read, if the defense brings extra rushers off the edge that slant sits in the vacated throwing lane for a quick release.

Pair this with Bounce Slot Cross or Mtn Y Cross from the same set to keep defenders guessing between quick inside breaking routes and deeper crossing patterns, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.

Avoid firing into the flat against a sitting zone linebacker, if you see a defender sink low on the trips side hold the ball and let the deep slant develop instead.
