Breakdown

Slants out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Wk sends the trips side into a double slant combo with the outermost receiver working an inside slant while the middle trips receiver runs a shallow drag underneath, and the innermost slot man releases on a quick option route to the flat. Backside, the isolated X runs a bang slant that breaks hard toward the middle of the field opposite the trips look. This is a classic man beater built on quick, tight breaking routes designed to win with timing and separation before the pocket collapses, and the primary read progression starts backside with the isolated slant, then comes back to the trips side slants working underneath any linebacker or nickel drop.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow drops mean you should key the slants sitting down in the soft spot for a completion. If the defense shows two deep safeties pre-snap it usually signals zone coverage, which invites a user controlled defender to jump the trips side slant route so be ready to reset to the backside isolated slant. Man coverage with press corners on the outside receivers is where this play thrives, since the slant angles beat outside leverage almost every time. Beware disguised zone blitzes where the nickel or slot corner sinks under the trips slants, that lurk threat can undercut the shallow drag and bait a costly turnover. Cover 3 with an aggressive underneath robber defender can jump the backside slant, so if you see a defender cheating toward that route pre-snap, prioritize the trips side combo instead.

Usage Tips

Fire this off quickly against Cover 1 or Cover 3 man looks since the slant angles create instant separation against trailing corners.

Check the pre-snap alignment of the slot corner on the trips side, if he is playing outside leverage the slants will break open underneath immediately.

Use the backside isolated slant as a hot read against blitz looks since it clears the LOS fastest and gives you a quick throwing lane.

Pair this play with Curls or Dig Cross from the same formation to keep the defense honest on shorter versus intermediate route depths.

Best called on second and short to second and medium where the underneath windows are tight but the quick timing negates a heavy pass rush.
