PA Flip Counter is a play-action counter run fake out of the Shotgun Y Off Trips Wk set that flips the run action away from the trips side to sell counter flow before working backside routes. The play design uses the counter step and misdirection to hold linebackers and the flowing safety, buying time for the quarterback to work a backside dig or crosser as the primary read while the trips side occupies the corners and safety over the top. Defensive Reads

Read the linebacker depth at the snap: if they step up hard on the flipped counter action, the backside window opens instantly for the dig or crosser. Identify single high versus two high pre-snap since single high safeties are far more likely to bite on the run fake and vacate the deep middle. Watch for a user lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle zone, as this can jump the backside crossing route if the fake does not hold him. Key the corner alignment on the backside receiver: tight man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play hits hardest. Beware of a fast-flowing defensive end or edge blitzer who reads the counter step early and does not bite, since this can collapse the pocket before the play fake sells.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or after you have established HB Flip Counter and Mtn WR Counter Rt so the defense respects the run fake and bites on linebacker flow.

Check the middle of the field pre-snap: against single high shells the backside dig or post will have room to work behind the flipped linebackers, so plant your primary read there immediately.

Against two high shells, hold the ball an extra beat through your play fake since the safeties are less likely to bite, then look to the trips side breakout for a shorter completion.

Hot route the backside route to a deeper comeback or dig if you see the corner playing off man, since the play fake naturally opens throwing lanes against man coverage.

Pair this call with RPO Alert Flip Counter and HB Flip Counter in the same series so defenders cannot sit on the counter run key without giving up the play-action shot.
