Mtn Z Spot is a Cover 3 beater built off the Y Off Trips Wk set in Shotgun with 11 personnel and pre-snap motion. The diagram shows the backside X on a vertical route to clear the deep half, while the trips side runs the true spot concept: the outside receiver settles in on a corner route, the middle man runs the quick hitch/curl into the flat window, and the inside man works an under route across the field underneath the linebackers. The HB releases into a check release flat route as the outlet, giving the QB a five-man route distribution against zone drops. Primary read progression starts with the spot window (corner to curl to under) on the trips side, and if the zone rotates hard to trips, the QB can work back to the backside vertical or check it down to the HB in the flat.
Pre-snap, key the safety alignment and cornerback depth on the trips side, two deep safeties with soft corners signal zone and the spot concept will have room to operate underneath. Watch the defender assigned to the motion man, if he mirrors the motion across the formation before the snap that is a clear man coverage tell and the user should expect the corner route or backside vertical to be the target. Post-snap, user the underneath zone defender in the curl to flat area since that is exactly where the spot concept wants to throw, sitting a user controlled linebacker or nickel in that window can bait an interception. This play struggles against Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 quarters look with disciplined curl to flat defenders who stay home instead of biting on the shallow motion action. Blitz packages that bring pressure off the edge opposite the HB's check release can rush the quarterback before the spot window fully develops, so watch for nano blitz alignments pre-snap and adjust protection if needed.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you are almost certainly facing man coverage and should prioritize the corner route or backside vertical instead of the spot window.
This play is built to attack Cover 3 and other zone shells that leave a soft flat-to-curl window on the trips side, so call it on early downs when you expect zone drops from a base defense.
Hot route the HB from a check release flat route into a pure blocker if you are getting immediate pressure off the edge, this buys the QB extra time to let the spot concept develop.
Pair this play in a sequence with Mtn Y Cross or Bounce Slot Cross out of the same Y Off Trips Wk set, these route combos look identical pre-snap but attack different levels, keeping defenders honest against your motion and personnel.
Best used on second and medium or third and short situations where the underneath spot window against zone gives the QB a high percentage completion with YAC potential.
