Breakdown

22 Sluggo Verts is a trips formation shot play built off Shotgun Y Off Trips Wk. From the diagram, the boundary receiver on the backside runs an outside release sluggo (slant and go) up the sideline, while the two trips receivers on the play side both push vertical seams straight down the field. This is a classic four verticals shell with a sluggo tag replacing one of the seams, giving you both a Cover 2 beater (sluggo attacks the corner biting on the slant fake) and a Cover 3 beater (verts stress the deep third defenders). The primary read progression starts with the backside sluggo route since it exploits an aggressive corner jumping the underneath fake, then works to the two vertical seam routes on the trips side if the safety shell can't cover the middle of the field.

Defensive Reads

Watch the backside corner's depth and hips at the snap, since a corner playing tight man or jumping underneath routes is the exact matchup the sluggo is designed to beat. Identify single high versus two high safety shells immediately, as this determines whether you attack the sluggo (Cover 2) or the vertical seams (Cover 3). Look for user controlled defenders dropping into a deep middle lurk, since a rover style defender sitting in the throwing lane of the seam routes can bait an interception if you force that throw. Recognize Cover 4 or quarters shells with safeties reading the seam releases early, since this coverage can bracket both vertical routes and force you back to the sluggo as the only viable outlet. Be wary of disguised blitzes that bring extra rushers off the edge, since a five or six man pressure package can collapse the pocket before the deep routes fully develop.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, expect Cover 2 and prioritize the sluggo route since the corner will likely jump the slant portion.

If you see one deep safety in the middle of the field, that is Cover 3, and you should hot route or read the seams on the trips side since the deep third defender can only cover one vertical threat.

Use the sluggo as your first read against man coverage on the backside corner, since the double move at the top of the route breaks ankles when the corner bites on the initial slant.

Pair this play with Four Verticals or Curls Combo earlier in a drive to condition the defense into sitting on shorter routes, then hit them with the sluggo double move for an explosive shot play.

Best called on second or third and long when you need a big chunk gain, or on first down as a shot play to keep the defense honest against your run game out of the same personnel group.
